Joining the Operations Crew

- Persons wishing to join the Operations Group of the Association must complete the Application Form, be subject to a background check, be interviewed by the Coordinator or designee and accepted by a 2/3 vote of Operations Group members present at the business meeting following the submittal of the application. (Background checks criteria to be established and published).
- An Operations Group identification card will be issued
- Operations Group members who qualify as emergency responders shall:
- Maintain current EMT/MRT certification, if continuing to run as a Technician.
- Attend at least four meetings (Board or monthly) in a calendar year or commit to a weekly duty night.
- Be evaluated by the Coordinator and the Operations Committee. (Evaluation criteria to be established and published)
- If continued “active” membership is not recommended, the Operations Group member may grieve the decision according to Section 2.8 of the Operations Manual and must return any issued equipment within 1 month of final decision.
- “Non-Responding” Operations Group members do not meet the above criteria, but provide some service to the Group.

- All EMTs/MRTs shall be appropriately certified by the State of Connecticut.
- New EMTs/MRTs shall serve a probationary period of four (4) runs. They may then be designated as fully qualified EMTs/MRTs provided that:
- Their performance has been evaluated by the Coordinator and the fully qualified EMTs with whom they have served
- Evaluators recommend promotion to fully qualified status and promotion is accepted by a 2/3 vote of Operations Group members present at the next business meeting.
- The probationary EMT/MRT feels comfortable in assuming greater responsibility.
- Newly certified EMTs/MRTs may seek help and advice from any experienced member and shall be given all help possible to achieve full operating status. All new members will be assigned an experienced member to be a mentor.
Driver responsibilities and Qualification
- Drivers must have a valid Connecticut state driver’s license, a clean driving record, and a background check.
- Drivers will train and qualify with the driver training assistant coordinator.
- Drivers must also complete the following;
- CPR certification
- Bloodbourne pathogens
- NIMS Certification 100,200,700
- Hazmat awareness
- Completed physical form with Doctors approval
- Drivers are responsible for
- Safe handling of the ambulance at all times
- Communicating with “Valley Shore” at appropriate times
- Working knowledge of all medical equipment and location in the ambulance
- Proficient in gurney operations
- Disinfecting the gurney, ambulance and other equipment as necessary at the hospital
- Restocking the ambulance after the run, including replacing oxygen tanks.
- Ensuring the ambulance has at least ¾ tank of fuel.
